By the River – Performance Notes

This is really quite straightforward. Set a nice comfortable speed, not too fast and certainly not too slow, and if you keep the left hand rhythmical it more or less plays itself. The pedal markings are very important. Just about every bar should have the pedal held through it, changing at the end of the bar. This means that the staccato notes (e.g. bars 5-8) don't sound detached, but are in fact held, by the pedal, through the whole bar. The staccato affects the attack but not the release of the note.

Bars 137-158 can have considerably more rubato than the surrounding measures, and should be played with the soft pedal (though this can also be used in other pianissimo sections if desired). This section should be a marked contrast to the otherwise omnipresent left-hand ostinato.
